EAST RANGA 3-7 JULY REPORT

June gave way to July with good results for June. We were approximately 50% up on last June and some lovely fish in the 90+ cms range. We were blessed with a real mix or rods from well travelled Atlantic Salmon fisherman, super patient Steelheaders and total beginners.

We consequently had an interesting and varied approach to the fishing and some very notable catches including 3 first fish. The beats were generous in different measures and we saw fish caught from the top to the bottom of the river with different days giving different hot spots.

The water levels were unseasonably low and consequently the river was pretty clear. From a heavy tips and big flies on the 3rd the water warmed up some days and intermediate tips and long leaders with small flies started to work. By morning the water temperature was back around 6 degrees so heavier tips were needed.

What we have learned over the past 4 years is that being flexible and able to adjust to the conditions in key. There are ideal lines for East Ranga and there are wrong lines but what ever you bring make sure you have enough to cover from the top with a small fly to the bottom with a big ugly friggi… and a few options in between.

For the 4 days 12 rods landed 29 fish with the biggest to 93cms for Matthias R. First fish to Adam N, John P and Nick P. A wonderful few days of fishing.
